Didactics

Conference

  • Conference is held on Wednesdays from 8:00 am-1:00 pm and features interactive case-based didactics, simulation-based training, hands-on workshops, flipped classroom, and joint interdepartmental conferences.
  • The Conference schedule is based on a 48-week schedule, structured as four-week blocks of system-based material. The additional time is to accommodate holidays, in-service examinations, and regional and national conferences.
  • It is important to have didactic learning both specifically aimed toward PGY level as well as with all levels of training. For this reason, we utilize Foundations of Emergency Medicine (foundationsem.com) for the first two hours of conference.
    • This is a small-group-based interactive flipped classroom model designed specifically for the progressive education of the PGY level.
  • Following the PGY level-specific learning the next three hours of conference are combined for all levels of training to enhance discussion and active learning.
  • We understand individuals learn using different individual learning techniques. For this reason, when able, we give the option of choosing pre-conference supplemental material from traditional textbooks, high-yield text, and multimedia options.
    • This is facilitated by pairing the material with the Foundations of Emergency Medicine curriculum.
  • Additional one-hour conference at the change of shift Thursday mornings that is case-based and reviews two interesting cases and diagnoses from the prior week.
    • Presented by a PGY-2 resident and a faculty member.

Interdisciplinary Conferences

  • Incorporated into the didactic schedule every 3rd conference of each block.
  • Every third Thursday of the month the Emergency Medicine Department co-sponsors an additional “Interdisciplinary Expert Panel Discussion.”
    • These panel discussions are comprised of multiple specialties and work through a patient scenario to highlight a real-life workup and incorporate the expertise of multiple specialties.

Journal Club

  • Every third Tuesday evening of the month is Journal Club.
  • This is a two-hour discussion on relevant articles led by a PGY-3 resident and a faculty member.

Simulation

Held regularly throughout the year to team build and improve patient care.

Drills

There will be a mass casualty disaster drill scheduled during conference that the residents will take part in.

Lakeland Regional Emergency Department has incredible pathology and a large population of critically ill patients which provides the perfect training grounds to become a world class Emergency Physician. This residency will train you for the real world and will give you the confidence to handle any situation.

What is your favorite thing about living in Lakeland or Central Florida?
Lakeland is the perfect location in Florida to get to everything quickly. Tampa and Orlando are easy commutes for a dinner out. The beach is close on either coast and makes for a great get away from the Hospital.

Lakeland itself is growing at a tremendous pace and has great restaurants, breweries, mountain biking, road biking, sports, art festivals, theater performances, as well as maintaining affordable housing. You have the ability to train in a world class hospital but enjoy all of the outdoors that Florida has to offer in an amazing city.

If you would ask my children it would be camping at Fort Wilderness in Disney. The numerous world class hotels and water parks within a 45-minute drive make for great weekend getaways. Lately my kids and I have gotten really into going 4 wheeling together. There are incredible areas right by Lakeland to go and spend the day outdoors.

What is your favorite beach in Florida?
Little Gasparilla Island would have my vote but biased as I have a beach house there. Aside from LGI, Anna Maria and Clearwater are phenomenal and definitely a must see.

What is one reason residents should choose LRH EM Residency?
1. Remember, the patients are our teachers. The LRH EM Department for the last 10 years has been either the busiest or the second busiest EM department in the country (lots of patients and advanced pathology). Combine that with a large and diverse group of EM faculty pulling from residencies all across the country makes for a great training environment.

2. At LRH there is a strong focus on resident wellness, but more importantly there is a culture of wellness and support throughout the hospital. This supportive environment allows you to practice emergency medicine effectively leading to more efficient learning.

What are your favorite hobbies?
Surfing, breathwork, being on almost any beach with my family, and other typical Florida stuff (raising baby alligators, trying to shoot down hurricanes)

What is one reason residents should choose LRH EM Residency?
Our facility and staff is fairly unique in a region driven by CMG groups. We are always among the busiest emergency departments in the country, and we have great pathology. We have a faculty excited to teach in a "real-world" environment without it becoming all about "moving the meat" and cheap labor.

What are your favorite hobbies?
My biggest "hobby" right now is parenting with three kids ages 10, 8, and 6, but personally I like camping, hiking, and beach time.

What is your favorite thing about living in Lakeland or Central Florida?
I live in Lakeland. It may not be super exciting, but it works well for our family. To be honest, if you're interested in night-life, it's probably not for you. However, my commute is <10 minutes. There are lots of great outdoor preserves, trails, etc. There's also a surprising amount of good small family owned restaurants and things to do. We are close enough to 2 large metro areas that if we want to go to concerts or events, we are able to do so without too much hassle. I would think it would be great for a resident with a young family.

Do you have any special interests in EM or medicine?

At this point, I'm mostly interested in getting back in to resident teaching. I have a background in administration (fellowship, MBA) and personal finance of the young physician (and in our group some of the older physicians too).

What is your favorite activity in central Florida?
Similar to my above hobbies: Beach, camping, hiking, cycling.

What is your favorite beach in Florida?
Fort De Soto. Hands down the best combination of beach, amenities, and accessibility without too many people (compared to other local beaches.)

What is one reason residents should choose LRH EM Residency?
1. Our population of patients are not the healthiest. Sadly, because of this reason, we have large amount of pathology for residents to learn.
2. There is an abundance of critical care to obtain experience for a resident beginning to spread their wings. This is also supported by our large volume of patients.
3. Support from other specialties is incredible. Our practice at this institution, there are very few reasons to transfer to another facility. For this reason, residents have the opportunity to learn also directly from consultants who ultimately take care of the definitive problem outside of the diagnosis and stabilization phase.

What are your favorite hobbies?
Boating, reading, travel, music, theater productions, following sports

What is your favorite thing about living in Lakeland or Central Florida?
I live in Tampa. If you are a sport fan, we have professional teams in Football (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Hockey, (Tampa Bay Lightning), Baseball (Tampa Bay Rays) and soccer (the rowdies). Many of these teams have celebrated great success over the last few years.

Tampa is also home to the Starz center. (Broadway shows etc.)
