Hematology-Oncology Fellowship

MISSION:

To educate, mentor, and develop the next generation of Hematology and Medical Oncology physicians, who will deliver evidence-based care, with compassion, integrity, and respect.

We aim and are committed to educating, mentoring, and developing the next generation of physicians through broad clinical exposure, close faculty mentorship, multidisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based education. Our fellows will care for a diverse and complex patient population while gaining progressive clinical responsibility, meaningful research opportunities, and exposure to specialized training through our collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Why Train at LRH?

Lakeland Regional Health is building a new Hematology-Oncology fellowship designed to combine the breadth and complexity of a major health system with the personalized mentorship of a two-fellows-per-year program. Located in Central Florida between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland Regional Health serves a large and diverse catchment area, providing fellows with exposure to a remarkably broad spectrum of hematologic and solid malignancies. With a 910-bed Medical Center, modern facilities, advanced technology, and comprehensive ancillary services, our fellows will train in an environment where complex oncology care is part of everyday practice. A defining feature of our program is our collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center, providing opportunities for specialized training in leukemia and bone marrow transplantation. This partnership allows us to bring the expertise of a nationally recognized cancer center together with the breadth of community-based oncology practice. Our dedicated faculty, nurses, pharmacists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary teams are committed to making education central to patient care. Fellows will receive close mentorship, progressive clinical responsibility, and exposure to contemporary, cutting-edge cancer therapies. We also believe great fellowship training includes the opportunity to ask questions and pursue them. Fellows will have opportunities for clinical research, investigator-initiated projects, quality improvement, and collaborations with pharmaceutical and research partners. As an inaugural fellow, you won’t simply enter an established program—you will help build its culture, shape its future, and become part of its legacy. Come for the breadth of pathology. Stay for the mentorship, opportunities, and Florida sunshine. Lakeland Regional Health Hematology-Oncology Fellowship — where big-city-level clinical exposure meets personalized community-based training.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide fellows with a broad clinical foundation, progressive subspecialty training, meaningful research opportunities, and exposure to the rapidly evolving world of hematology and oncology.

Year 1 - Build the Foundation

The first year focuses on developing strong clinical skills through a combination of inpatient and outpatient hematology-oncology rotations. Fellows will gain broad exposure to hematologic and solid tumor malignancies while working closely with our multidisciplinary teams.

The emphasis is on building a strong foundation in the evaluation and management of cancer patients while developing the clinical judgment, procedural skills, and knowledge necessary for progressive independence throughout fellowship.

Year 2 — Subspecialty Depth

The second year expands the fellow’s clinical experience with more focused subspecialty training and increasing clinical responsibility.

A centerpiece of the second year will be our planned Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant away rotation at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

This unique opportunity will provide fellows with exposure to complex hematologic malignancies, leukemia management, and bone marrow transplantation/cellular therapy while learning alongside specialists at a nationally recognized cancer center.

Year 3 — Individualize Your Training

The third year is designed to provide greater flexibility and independence, with an emphasis on research, subspecialty clinics, and advanced clinical training.

Fellows will have opportunities to develop focused expertise in areas such as breast oncology and, as our program continues to grow, potentially lung oncology, while continuing selected core hematology-oncology rotations.

Didactic Curriculum

  • Didactic lectures- Weekly faculty led teaching sessions covering core hematology and medical oncology topics. Supplemented by guest lecturers and leaders from industry and the broader oncology community.
  • Board Review – Weekly Sessions, designed to prepare fellows for subspecialty certification.
  • Journal Club- Held weekly and focused on critically evaluating the rapidly changing hematology-oncology literature.
  • Grand Rounds – Twice-yearly grand rounds presentations by each fellow to the broader health system, developing communication, teaching, and presentation skills.
  • Educational Resources – Access to major evidence-based resources including ASCO, ASH, and NCCN educational and clinical resources.
  • Research & Scholarly Activity – Fellows will have dedicated research blocks throughout fellowship, allowing protected time to develop meaningful scholarly projects.
  • Subspecialty Clinic Experiences – Fellows will have focused subspecialty clinic experiences to complement broad general hematology-oncology training.
