Family Medicine
Residency Program

MISSION:

to fully equip our next generation of doctors with all the skills they will need to practice full-scope family medicine, build long-term relationships with their patients, peers and colleagues, and be roles model for our future generation of community health-care leaders.

Here at Lakeland Regional Health, we aim to provide exemplary training to the next generation of family physicians in order to meet the healthcare needs of our rapidly growing community. We aim to promote positive health habits that prevent disease and to provide continuity of care across a multitude of healthcare settings. We aim to train physicians who will provide full spectrum, whole-person, evidence-based care to each and every individual.

Why Train at LRH?

The US Department of Health and Human Services ranks Polk County as a health professional shortage area for Primary Care Physicians. Polk County has also been listed as one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation. Lakeland Regional Health is an 892-bed hospital, which is one of the largest in Florida, and contains one of the busiest Emergency Rooms in the nation.

Residents will have the opportunity to take care of patients in a community where access to primary care preventive services is urgently needed. They will work in a rapidly growing hospital system caring for a variety of patients of different backgrounds and with a diverse pathology of disease. Our newly constructed 76,300-square-foot medical office building is home to the Family Medicine GME Residency clinic ā€“ where residents provide a full spectrum of health care services to patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics.

Curriculum

Inpatient Rotations

All hospital-based rotations will take place at Lakeland Regional health. The inpatient Family Medicine Service will be led by the family medicine core clinical faculty and run by the FM residents. The service will provide care for adult, pediatric, and maternity patients from the Family Medicine continuity clinic.

Outpatient Office

Currently under construction is a brand new 76,300-square-foot medical office building that serves as the continuity clinic for the Family Medicine Residency. The clinic will boast 26 exam rooms, a dedicated pediatric waiting room, a conference room ā€“ which also serves as a group visit lifestyle medicine teaching kitchen and dedicated resident office/workspace. Residents will spend 1 half-day a week in continuity clinic for PGY-1 and 3 half-days for PGY2 and PGY3.

Research

Lakeland Regional Health has a research team ready and available to assist in our resident and faculty GME scholarly activities. Our program promotes research, scholarly activity, and critical thinking to advance the delivery of healthcare and train the next generation of physicians with the newest research and innovation.
